EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is believed to work by helping the brain reprocess traumatic memories, making them less distressing and more adaptive. This therapy has been shown to be especially effective in reducing the symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other trauma-related disorders. EMDR has been the subject of numerous clinical trials and reviews, and its efficacy has been supported by a growing body of evidence. Although EMDR was originally developed for the treatment of trauma, and is still mostly used for this purpose, the treatment in the hands of a trained professional has also shown promise in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.
It is important to note that while research supports the effectiveness of EMDR, individual responses to therapy can vary. Some individuals may respond better than others, and it may not be suitable for everyone. Furthermore, EMDR does not replace traditional psychotherapy, but happens in the broader context of psychological therapy. It is also not a technique that is typically utilised during the first few sessions. In the hands of a skilled therapist however, this therapy has been shown to be effective and lead to lasting positive changes for trauma sufferers.
